Not long now till Wimbledon – and we all know that the number one snack for tennis fans is the delicious, juicy sweetness of a plump red strawberry, preferably swimming in cream.
You can beat the Wimbledon set if you grow your own, though. Plant early varieties like Honeoye under cloches to intensify the spring sunshine, and they flower and fruit as early as May.
Push it further by forcing in midwinter. Dig up strawberry plants in January (after they’ve had some frost) and pot up to bring indoors. They’ll be flowering by March, and fruiting by late April – months before Andy Murray has even picked up a racquet.
